PPP Picks: Sippy & Straw Cup Picks

17
Jul

So this week I had the unfortunate pleasure of discovering the sippy cups I purchased for my daughter we pretty much junk. You might have been there before… you pick your little one up out the car seat to discover their pretty much drenched from where their cups has leaked. Or, you walk into the playroom from quick trip down the hall to discover juice is puddled all over the floor. Well, rather than trash the cups we bought, I thought maybe I would share with you a couple of budget friendly options we really like at our house.

I am not really a person who steps outside of my box when it comes to items like straw or sippy cups. I find something I like or that works and I stick with it. Well, this week my daughter decided that she does not like Dora anymore… “I’m too big for Dora momma, but I’m not too big for princesses.” She’s two and a half, but some days she acts like she’s sixteen, all be it a sixteen year old with a Disney Princess obsession. Anyhow, I don’t know if any of you out there have head strong kids or not, but I do. Once my daughter decides she has put her mind to something that’s it. She’s done with Dora (at least for this week).

Since I am a “stick with what you like kinda gal”, all the straw cups at our house are currently Dora. This is not because we love Dora, we actually prefer plain stuff, but because that’s the only print we have been able to find in our favorite insulated straw cup by Munchkin.

It’s BPA free, super easy to clean and for us… this cup does not leak! We LOVE these cups. They allow my sometimes slow drinker to take her time with her milk and keeps it cold and contained while she’s playing around. Plus, they are generally pretty reasonable for a 2-pack. Babies R Us iconruns them on sale “buy one get one 50% off” and they are about $9 for a two pack.

In an effort to be a good mommy (or whatever you want to call it), I took my daughter out to pick-out some Princess cups this week. Our cups were about a year or 18 months old… so it was time. Wow, is about all I can say… how are some cups on the market? The sippy cups we got are nearly impossible to sip from and they leak. Not just kinda leak… they LEAK!!! So disappointed. I am going to have to figure out how to toss these cups without my little one knowing they are gone.

Like I said, I don’t want to trash any cups. I think sippy cups are sorta a personal choice. What I do want to do is share with you a quick list of cups that work and that we really like at our house. All these cups are easy to clean, BPA free, budget friendly and for us do not leak.

PPP Straw Cup Picks:

Munchkin Straw Cups-

You can find the 2-pack in Dora, Diego, etc. at Toys R Us and Babies R Us iconfor $8.99. They do run their 2-packs of cups on sale usually “buy one get one 50% off.”

I was so tickled to find a solid version of this cup at Target today. You can only get these in-store and they are $3.29 each and sold as singles.

They are easy to clean, BPA free and they last. For us we don’t have a problem with leaking. We have had an occasional drop here or there where milk has been in the straw and my daughter didn’t drink it.
Playtex BPA Free Lil Gripper Straw Cup:

We have these also and they are just as good as the munchkin. They make an insulated version as well. These are $7.99 at Babies R Us and they are usually included in the “buy one get one 50% off” 2-pack cup sales they run.
These are also easy to clean and I love the fact that you can get fun colors and not forced to get a print or character. We picked-up a pink and purple pack today.

PPP Sippy Cup Picks:

Playtex The Insulator 9 oz. Spill-Proof Cups:

These are hands down our favorite sippy cup. My daughter prefers straw over sippy cups, but we use both. We usually save the straw cups for milk and sippys for everything else. We first tried a Playtex sippy cup when we got a free cup from Juicy Juice.

These are $7.99 for a 2-pack at Babies R Usicon and we like any version of sippy we have tried from Playtex. I think they are extremely easy to clean. They have sute prints, but after the whole Dora fall out… solids might be better! :o )

Gerber Graduates Fun Grip Cups:

These are another pretty decent choice. They don’t leak, but thrown hard enough the valve can dislodge. We don’t have that at this age, but at about 12-18 months… these were frequently tossed across the room and on a hard floor the vale did pop out a time or two.
These are available in solids, are BPA free and a good price at $7.99 a 2-pack at Babies R Us icon. Watch for their 2-pack cups sale again and you can pick these up at “buy one get one 50% off.”

That’s my two cents for what it’s worth and what the PPP family prefers. Being sorta a baby item junkie, we have tried lots to find a select few that we love.

Sorry to hear about your daughters injuries while using these cups. That's just awful! It does sound like it was just a sort of freak accident and what happened no matter what cup was involved. Straw and sippy cups are made of hard plastic which can injur if you fall on it, etc… that's any cup, not just Munchkin cups.

My child has been using these for about 18 + months and we use them while on the go, playing inside and outside the house, etc. I am even ashamed to admit she has been known to carry it around by the straw in her mouth… I know, I know…I stop her if I see it.

This is meerley an unbiased review of some cups that work for us and are BPA free and don't leak as bad as your average cup, it is no way an endorsement. We have not ever worked with Munchkin or received any sort of discount from them for their cups.

Penny Pinching Parent is a site where we share what works for us and where parents like yourself can share their experiences. It's up to readers to use this information and make an informed decision as to what items they feel are right for their child.

I did check to see if there have ever been any recalls on Munchkins Strw cups and at this point in time there have not been any warnings or recalls issued.

Thank you for sharing your story and thank you for reading Penny Pinching Parent.

Just a note to parents using the dora straw cups, BOTH of my daughters where injured while using this sippy cup. If you do use this cup for your kids, MAKE sure that they are seated and in no way mobile! My oldest when 3.5 yrs old, had set this cup on the floor while dancing ballet, spun around (very slowly) and fell on this cup. The result was a deep cut on her chin (down to the jawbone) about 5 inches long requiring 10 stitches outside and 2 inside to close it! Thought it was a fluke until only weeks later, my 1.5 year old fell with the cup while walking (again slowly) with this cup and the flexible rubber straw made a big hole in the underside of her lip which swelled to about 4 times its normal size. No emergency room trip here, but very painful for my baby. Needless-to-say, I threw all of these cups directly into the garbage. I personally found them to be a serious hazzard to my kids. If you can keep your kids perfectly immobile while drinking, you can take a chance with these. Otherwise, I'd look for a different option.
