PPP Budget Backyard Bonanza Series: Gardening With Your Little Ones

Welcome to our first installment of Penny Pinching Parent’s Bargain Backyard Bonanza.

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing budget friendly tips, as well as some great outdoor toys, gear and products that will help turn your backyard into your own budget friendly, kid friendly paradise!

Are you and your family backyard people? As I mentioned earlier today we are definitely a backyard family! We are out at any chance we can. Some of my fondest memories as a child are from when I was outside either riding a bike, fishing or catching fireflies.

Even though I have always been an outdoor person, I do realize that some people just don’t care for the great outdoors… even if the outdoors is just a few feet literally out their door and they can find it challenging to get outside and have fun with their little ones. Kids these days spend 50% less time outside than they did 20 years ago.

One thing we spend a lot of time doing together as a family is working in the yard. Although this might not sound like fun, this is one of our 3 year olds favorite things to do… she loves to “garden.” We do not have your idyllic flat neighborhood backyard. We live on somewhat of a rolling lot with lots of trees, we have spent quite a bit of time clearing and cleaning the lots and of course planting new items. But this is such a fun and budget friendly activity for us to all do. I just love letting our little one help pick the flowers when we go to the garden center.

As a person who enjoys gardening I try to sneak in little gardening tidbits about how some flowers grow in shade and some in sun… just simple little things, on our visits. Our daughter even has her own little flower garden where she can pick until all the flowers are gone and she has herbs like rosemary & mint where she can walk by and rub her hands.

We have seen some amazing things while in our own backyard…we have seen all sorts of bugs, a bat, lizards, a few snakes, of course squirrels & chipmunks, lots of birds and their nests, some cool natural plants like moss and mushrooms and my daughters personal favorites- lots of butterflies. Spending time outside just comes naturally to us.

It seems like in light of the economy there has been a big shift and people are doing a lot more gardening, even our little ones favorite shows like “Sesame Street”, “Kai-Lan”, “OSO”, “Mickey Mouse’s Clubhouse” and “Max and Ruby” (just to name a few of our favorites) are showing their favorite characters growing flowers and veggies.

So, what if spending time outside doesn’t come naturally to you, but your little one has expressed an interest in gardening this year?

Well, one thing you can do is take advantage of great new site called YourGardenShow.com and turn planning some outdoor “gardening” fun into a really fun activity that is sure to provide hours of entertainment and a lifetime of memories. Plus, this can be very budget friendly because YourGardenShow.com is free and you can start small.

YourGardenShow.com even sent over some great tips on how PPP parents can use their site to plan out some budget conscious, family friendly summer fun…

1) Sign-up & create your account: Go on the site and create a user name that your little one likes (and that you can both remember!)

2) Figure out what zone you are in: Depending on the age of your little one you can use this as a great beginning “lesson” in geography. You can show your tot where you all live and start to talk about states, cities and regions of the country.

3) Find a garden you both love and can aspire to create together: Browse through pictures of gardens and make your plan… even if it is a “mini” version in a planter on your deck or patio!

4) Visit the plants area to learn more about different kinds of plants and what will grow in your zone: This is perfect for my little one… she would just point to pink or purple flowers… she doesn’t care what else we have, as long as we have some pink & purple flowers!

5) Take a trip to the local garden center and select a few seeds or seedlings to get started: Peas and green beans are hearty and most children will enjoy snacking on almost anything they’ve seen grow! We pretty much picked the sugar snap peas off the vine and ate them this summer. Since I don’t use pesticides on our veggies, I would just rinse the snap peas with the hose and we would eat them unsteammed… on the downside though, since we don’t use pesticides, we lost our snap peas a few weeks ago to ants though because it was so hot and they ate them for water I guess.

6) Make a calendar for your watering plan: Another great way to learn… you can learn about days of the week, months, planning & more.

7) Enjoy conversations about photosynthesis, the magic of the life cycles of plants, where produce comes from: Depending on the age of your tot you can make this as big or little of a learning activity as is age appropriate.

I think these are some great tips from YourGardenShow.com! I think you could even expand upon this and visit your local farmer’s market or a nursery and let your child see and experience locally grown items… it’s so much more fun than a trip to the grocery store!
