Jones, No. 20).’  Yup, re-reading it. My gal has her first official loose tooth (actually 2) and so we are re-reading it at bedtime. We LOVE reading Junie B. Jones at bedtime and Daddy and I eagerly vie for a turn to read a chapter!

I was checking my personal e-mail this evening and had a new Random House Read & Play newsletter (if you are raising a reader it’s a newsletter I highly recommend… they send links to all sorts of free printables and events).  Anyhow, the latest newsletter suggested I sign-up for the new Junie B. Jones Book Club and mentioned the upcoming Junie B. Jones Stupid Smelly Bus Tour (we will be adding the dates for this to PPP’s calendar ASAP!).

As a Junie B. fan, I knew my gal would love to sign-up for a club and receive a membership card… we recently stumbled across my old ‘Barbie Fan Club’ card and she was very intrigued with the idea of a ‘club membership card’.

So, we signed-up and I wanted to pass along the information to readers, because not only do you get cool Junie B. perks like exclusive activity sheets and a membership ID car (so nostalgic), but you also get a really fantastic freebie (while supplies last)… a FREE Junie B. Jones book!!!

Here’s All The Details On The Junie B. Kids’ Reading Club…

I signed-up this evening and it said that the kit would be here in July… what a great little surprise for the gal this Summer! I know she will be so excited… we really enjoyed the ‘Stupid Smelly Bus’ and actually read it in her book club this school year.

Also, Don’t Forget To Check Out The Stupid Smelly Bus Tour!

PPP Pick: Spring Into Spring Cleaning With New Swiffer With Gain Scent Products

NewSwifferWithGain

Spring Has Finally Sprung & It’s Time For Spring Cleaning!

Are you finally getting a little bit of warmer weather where you are? We are! It looks like Spring has finally sprung where we live. The longer days and warmer weather have got me into ‘Spring cleaning’ mode recently and I cannot wait to clean our home from top to bottom and hopefully declutter along the way!

We live in a home that is about 25 years old and even though we have worked hard to make lots of updates including paint, flooring, keep our filters changed, vacuum regularly, but it I still have to battle dust. I think part of the problem is that our furniture is dark and I notice it more, but needless to say… a Swiffer duster is my cleaning partner in crime. I LOVE Swiffer dusters and keep one handy pretty much all the time so I can do a quick dust when I walk by something! I also love the fact that since it’s just a duster and now that I am past having to worry about a toddler eating everything… my Kindergartner can even help me when she wants.

Spring Into Spring cleaning With New Swiffer With Gain Scent.

You know how when you clean and you have that fresh smell how it can sort of lift your mood? I love that. I like for things to smell clean, not overwhelming, but clean. Now, my favorite Swiffer products can give me that sort of lift when I am cleaning. This Spring Swiffer has launched new line of their best cleaning products now with the scent of Gain. So, I can get that little mood lift of a clean smell even when I am just quickly spot dusting.

Penny Pinching Parent was sent samples of the new products and I am just as big of fan of the new items as I was of the original ones. I was a little worried that the scent of Gain would be too strong…but for me, it’s not. I find it to actually be fairly subtle and it doesn’t really leave a scent behind, but just sort of freshens and gives your that sort of cleaning lift that I mentioned earlier because things smell fresh.

You will find the deep cleaning power of Swiffer and the joyful scent of Gain in the following new line of items…

Sure to lift your spirits while you clean, the new line includes:

  • Swiffer Dry Cloths with Gain scent
  • Swiffer Wet Cloths with Gain scent
  • Swiffer 180° Dusters with Gain scent
  • Swiffer WetJet Solution with Gain scent

Save With Swiffer Coupons & Promotions:

I wouldn’t be a ‘penny pinching parent’ if I didn’t mention the money-saving coupons that you can find on Swiffer’s site.

Right now it looks like they have the following coupons & special promotions that you can print:

  • UP TO A $5 COUPON ON SWIFFER SWEEPER- Buy a Sweeper Starter Kit and get a free refill (up to $5.00).
  • UP TO A $7 COUPON ON SWIFFER WETJET- Buy a WetJet Starter Kit and get a free WetJet Refill (up to $7.00).

PPP Pick: Printable Kindergarten Sight Word Flash Cards

PPPSightWordPrintables

Hi there readers! Long time no posting huh?!? Seems like there just isn’t any time these days and days just pass by so, so fast. You know how it is… one minute you have a newborn and then you blink and you have a Kindergartner! Where does the time seriously go?

Free Kindergarten Sight Word Printable Flash Cards

Since our gal is now a big kid Kindergartner, she’s having fun reading and writing. She’s a great student who loves learning. Reading and Phonics in general are two of my gal’s stronger areas.  I think this is mainly due to the fact that she doesn’t mind putting in the work in those areas at all. She will let me show her sight word flash cards when we are sitting there eating a snack or even when we are stuck somewhere waiting in the car. I also will pull a pad and pen out when we are waiting at a restaurant or a for a check-up. Anytime we have to wait I try to fill that time with some sort of fun learning.  She doesn’t mind it at all and she really is proud when she reads a new word that I might throw in or a new word in a book or on a sign.

Up until last week we had sort of a mixed bag of sight word cards from school, from lists, etc. I wanted to make sure we weren’t missing any key words and was beyond tired of my mishmash of cards.  I wanted a set of flash cards that were uniform… so I (finally) typed up a list of 200 words we are working on. We have a green box for ‘go words’ or words she knows by heart and a small yellow box of ‘almost words’ that we are still working on. We use these cards for both reading and spelling practice.

Since it’s a pretty comprehensive list of sight words, I wanted to share them with anyone looking for a free printable set of Kindergarten Sight Words.

(updated link… you can now download straight from PPP)

Kindergarten Sight Words Download

This is a group of cards of combined lists and is a pretty sizable list for Kindergarten, but if you have a list you want to work on then just pull out a small amount of cards at a time and save the rest. I like the size of these cards because they are easy for small hands and easy to use and tuck away.

Sight Word Flash Card Tips…

Just a couple of tips to share on how we use these, etc.

  • Use cardstock- I printed these out on card stock and just cut them apart. I do not laminate these. Also, you could punch a hole and put a binder ring to keep them together. You can find these in the office aisle at Walmart or Target or an office supply store like Staples.
  • Easy way to separate the ones to work on- As I mentioned above, we have a green card box (just the little inexpensive ones that are less than 50 cents at the grocery store) and a yellow box. When we work on the cards and my gal is super excited to get to move a card or cards to the green box.
  • Keeping up with progress- On the back of cards I have two columns… one that says ‘Read’ and the other that says ‘Spell’. I mark the day that my gal can read a word and the day she can spell it on the back of the card. I do because it helps me track words we are having trouble with. Also, it’s another pride or sense of accomplishment thing for my gal because I can point out to her when she’s conquered a troublesome word. I keep on doing this even after a word can be read, etc. because sometimes she will forget how to spell one every now and then and honestly… it’s just a habit at this point!
  • Ways to use to work on spelling-  We work on spelling several different ways, but a few of the ways that we use flash cards to help us spell are by having my daughter read the word and then when she thinks she can spell it, she turns it over and either spells it by writing it (on paper or on a lined dry erase board) or by using magnetic letter tiles (I have the tiles in alphabetical order on an easel board in front of her and she puts them on a magnetic board in front of her).
  • Make-up sentences with the words- Take a small pile and put them in a bowl or basket on the table. Take turns drawing out a card, reading the word and then using the word in a sentence. I find this extra helpful for words sound alike, but have different meanings (homophones)… ‘two’ and ‘too’ or ‘their’ and ‘there’.

Hope you enjoy these tips and the cards and that you have fun helping your little one learn to read!

PPP Picks: American Girl’s 2013 Girl Of The Year Sage Copeland

2013 American Girl Girl Of The Year Has Arrived

AmericanGirlSage

It’s official, the new American Girl Girl of the Year doll has been released and her name is Saige Copeland™.

Here’s a tad bit about Sage from the American Girl website…

‘Saige Copeland™ loves the arts and her horses. But when both of her passions are threatened, she turns to her creative side. With imaginative solutions, she proves that one girl can make a difference.’

Sage apparently loves horse and art and her story is about how she helps to turn her passions into actions.  I think she is so pretty with her auburn hair, turquoise eyes and freckles. I am really looking forward to seeing Sage here in person in just a bit (we have a big trip to the Atlanta American Girl Doll store planned for a 6th birthday surprise for my gal).

sweeps-balloons

As part of the launch of the 2013 Girl of the Year, American Girl is hosting a ‘Soar with Sage’ sweepstakes and if your gal is between the ages of 8 and 13, they can create a hot air balloon design and be entered to win one of 10 prize packages worth more than $260, including a Saige 18″ doll and her hot air balloon. You can find the template for entry and all the details about the promotion on the sweepstakes page.

Shhhh…. It’s A Surprise!

My daughter is just now getting to the age where she has asked for a ‘big girl’ American Girl doll. She has an American Girl Bitty Baby that she absolutely adores. Her name is Elizabeth and she has loved her more than any other baby she has owned.

McKennaAmericanGirl

One day a few months ago though my gal noticed the 2012 Girl of the Year, McKenna, in our American girl catalog. McKenna is a gymnist and my gal takes gymnastics. Toss in the fact that my daughter and McKenna have the same eye color and hair and it was pretty much love at first site.

Well, mommy, being new to this whole American Girl thing, didn’t realize that the Girl of the Year is only available for one year or while supplies last. So, when my daughter discovered McKenna… she was already on backorder. We went ahead and ordered her, but didn’t tell the gal. My daughter’s b-day is literally days after Christmas, so I was keeping my fingers crossed that she came in.  We told her she might get her for her birthday and probably not Christmas and that we would put it on the list, just in case she didn’t come in. We also told her that there was a big chance we might not be able to find her, explained the whole Girl of the Year thing, etc.

So, long story short, the doll and the other items we ordered came in. They actually arrived a little early. McKenna is even prettier in person than she looks in the catalog. My daughter doesn’t have a clue!! I feel like I am sitting on the biggest secret.

We told her we would take her to the American Girl sometime around her birthday or next time we were able to make it to Atlanta.  We have told her we would look to see if they might have any McKenna dolls left. We told her if not, that we would just get one of the ones that you can order to look like you, the My American Girl dolls or get one similar. She really doesn’t have a clue!!

I will share more about the big surprise later once her birthday arrives and once we surprise her and take our trip to the American Girl store. All of that of course will be when I find a stolen moment to blog… which is tricky these days! We start back to homeschool this week and I know the adjustment is going to kick our booty! We have become super lazy during our holiday break. It was so worth it though, I have loved every second of sleep and laziness!

Hope everyone is having a great new year and wishing you all the best in 2013!

Disclosure: Penny Pinching Parent is not affiliated with American Girl and this is not a paid or sponsored post. Just wanted to share about the new Girl of the Year and our exciting surprise for our gal. 2012 was rough on our gal… so we are pretty excited to kick off the new year with a fun surprise!
